Context:
The exponential increase in avocado consumption in the US and worldwide in the last two decades has brought growing prosperity and development for the Mexican state of Michoacán, the only state authorized by the American government to export avocados to the US. Certainly, the popularity of the fruit is something very positive for all the actors involved in its production, distribution and commercialization because the economic benefits could be very important.
However, what many consumers don't know is the complex situation of violence and armed conflicts that exist in the region due to the interest of the different cartels that seek to become part of the growing avocado business in a violent and illegal manner. The dangers and violence that avocado growers and their families face is so great that many have decided to create their own armed groups to protect themselves due to the lack of support from the authorities.
While the US avocado consumer continued to enjoy a year-round availability of the fruit, a sudden price hike in early 2022, and the threat of potential shortages, brought back to the public eye the news about the dangers and violence that avocado producers in Michoacán have faced for a long time, and the cost and sacrifice they have to pay daily to continue producing and sending this highly demanded fruit to consumers outside their borders.

El incremento exponencial del consumo de aguacate en EE. UU. y a nivel mundial en las últimas dos décadas ha traído una creciente prosperidad y desarrollo al estado mexicano de Michoacán, el único estado autorizado por el gobierno estadounidense a exportar aguacates hacia este país. Ciertamente, la popularidad de la fruta es para todos los actores que participan en su producción, distribución y comercialización algo muy positivo porque los beneficios económicos podrían ser muy importantes.
Sin embargo, lo que muchos consumidores desconocen es todo el entramado de conflictos armados que existe y que se ha producido en esta región por el interés de los diferentes cárteles y grupos armados que buscan ser parte del prolífico negocio de manera violenta e ilícita. Tanto es la violencia y el peligro que corren los productores de aguacates y sus familias ante la mirada indiferente del gobierno, que muchos se han visto en la necesidad de armarse y defenderse ellos mismos con la creación de sus propios grupos armados de defensa.
Mientras el consumidor estadounidense seguía disfrutando de la disponibilidad del aguacate durante todo el año, una repentina subida de los precios a comienzos de 2022, y la amenaza de una potencial escasez, volvió a poner a la vista del público la realidad conflictiva y violenta que los productores de aguacates de Michoacán han tenido que enfrentar durante mucho tiempo, así como el costo y el sacrificio que tienen que hacer a diario para producir y hacer llegar esta demandada fruta a consumidores fuera de sus fronteras.
